After connecting an Overland NEO2000 to a Windows 2003 server and installing EMC networker. I had some very strange behaviors when I was just trying to label tapes. A few tapes would label, then things would just go bad. The most common error I recieved was:

Device/media error: read open error: the device file name
specified is unusable by CDI (drive status is Drive reports no
error − but state is unknown)

I also saw this one:

cannot set record size: block
size ioctl failed

In my case, this turned out to be a SCSI driver. Windows plug-n-play automatically added a SCSI driver for the LSI logic card in the server. When I replaced this driver with the one from LSI these errors were resolved.

For me, the lun shows up automatically in format. In this case, I just added a 197.00 GB Lun from a CX500. Output From the format command:

The Lun was previously unused, I chose the device, and wrote it’s first label.

The following are probably not necessary, but can’t hurt:

devfsadm -vC

disks

I am using emcpowerpath. Adding the devices to powerpath is:

powermt config

powermt save

To see the devices:

powermt display dev=all

Note. When using emcpower devices with zfs, if you add a lun to a zpool, format it first and put all of the space you want to use from the lun in partition0. Otherwise, it won’t actually add space to the zpool.
